November 2010

NAPS will be closed several days this month.  Due to parent-teacher conferences, no school this Thursday, November 4 for PK2 students ONLY and Friday, November 5 for PK3-Fifth grade students.  No school Thursday, November 11 in observance of Veterans’ Day.  No school November 24, 25, and 26 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Fifth Grade Bake Sale is scheduled for conference day, Friday November 5!  Enjoy fresh baked goods that morning, and packaged goodies for the ride home.

Pizza Lunch will NOT be served on Tuesday, November 23 due to the Thanksgiving feasts.

The Fifth Annual NAPS 5/10K Run, Walk, and Kid’s Fun Run is scheduled for this Sunday, November 7.  Registration is still open and NAPS friends and families are encouraged to attend.  For those that wish to support the event and snooze-in, please pre-register and receive a great t-shirt.  Last year the event raised over $7,000 for the school.  Registration forms are available at our website, at the front desk, or register online at ACTIVE.com.

The Tuesday Envelope is the most effective means of distributing information throughout the school.  We ask parents to fully empty the envelope before returning it.  This way, we know that you have received and seen the information.  It is also the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the envelope is returned to NAPS in a timely manner.  Please return the envelope the next school day.  In general, kindergarten through fifth grade parents should return the envelope on Wednesday, PK3 parents should return the envelope on Friday, and PK2 parents should return the envelope on Thursday. If your envelope is lost, please notify the administrative office and another will be issued for a minimal fee.

The One Call Now NAPS Alert System is up and running!  The system will be used to alert families of closings and emergency schedule changes regarding NAPS only.  Please do not rely on the system to send notifications regarding afterschool affiliate activities.  The home phone number, the cell phone numbers of both parents, and the email address provided on the Student Information Sheet have been input into the system.  If this information has changed or you wish to use a different number, please contact Melanie Pasiuk at mpasiuk@napschool.com.

Innisbrook Orders are scheduled to arrive this week.  Please look for your product soon!  If your order is not sent home with your student early in the week, if possible, we will make every effort to have it ready for you on conference day.

Harvest for the Hungry Dress Down Day is scheduled for Wednesday, November 10.  In support of the midshipmen’s annual food drive, students may wear appropriate civilian clothing in exchange for specific holiday food items.

School Photo Retakes are scheduled for Monday, November 29.  If your child missed the original picture day or you desire a retake, call Chris Daley to schedule a sitting at 410-757-3090.

Winter Weather is suddenly upon us!  We request that children be sent to school with labeled coats, hats, and gloves as our students go outside for recess unless it is precipitating.  The wind chill factor is an issue and it is often several degrees colder near the water.  Within the building, students may wear either a NAPS sweatshirt or the navy blue sweater options described in the NAPS Handbook, pages 17 – 19.

Lunch drinks should be packed daily.  Please remember that a drink is not provided with Pizza or Panera lunch.

Morning Carpool Walk-In Students must be accompanied by an adult.  Children may only be dropped off into the care of a carpool staff member located in the circle.  For safety reasons, all walk-in parents and students are asked to use the crosswalk located near the NAPS mailbox.  This sidewalk and crosswalk were built at considerable expense in an effort to keep pedestrians from weaving in and out of the carpool line.

Guest Carpool Drivers should be fully educated about carpool procedures.  Please ensure that grandparents, extended family, and friends are provided with your carpool number or at least clearly communicate the child’s name to the staff member with the walkie-talkie.  Cars that drive past without announcing the number or name slow the process for all involved.  Also, please inform guest drivers that children should be prepared to exit the car on the school side, staff members will assist, and adults ONLY exit the car at mid-day PK carpool.

Stray Golf balls, while rare, are a genuine safety concern during carpool.  We have expressed concern to course management, and have asked that golfers exercise caution during carpool operations.  Please keep your windows rolled up to prevent an errant ball from hitting an individual.  A ball recently broke the sunroof of a carpool user and we are fortunate that no one was injured.

Uniform reminders:  We have received a few reports that the PE Uniform logo wears off prematurely.  We have contacted our uniform representative and hope to have it resolved soon.  In the interim, Flynn & O’Hara will replace any items that do not meet quality standards.  Also, logos and embroidery are acceptable on only a few uniform pieces.  Please check the handbook or contact Chris Daley before purchasing any items with adornment.

The Fifth Graders sang beautifully at the French Monument Ceremony.  They did a super job performing the French national anthem and representing NAPS.  Madame Lounsberry appreciates the efforts made to participate in this yearly event.

Breakfast with Santa – Save the Date of Saturday, December 4, 2010!  Our traditional holiday breakfast will feature a breakfast buffet, a visit from Santa, Santa photo opportunities, and goodie bags.  Space is limited and reservations are required.  Look for a registration form in an upcoming Tuesday Envelope.

Your Photos of NAPS Events are a welcome addition to our yearbook!  Please email your shots to Julie Winter at Julie.winter03@gmail.com or send prints in care of May Brady.  Prints will not be returned.  Thank you for your help!
